May Magic in Your Garden: Bloomtastic Fun for Everyone!

Blossom

Hey there, green thumbs and gardening newbies! May is here, and the Agriton UK crew is buzzing with excitement. It's the month where your garden truly bursts into life, with colourful blooms and happy veggies taking over the show! So, grab your gloves, get ready to get a little dirty, and let's make May a month of wonder in your garden paradise.

Planting Party Time!

  • Seed Spectacular: May is like a birthday for your veggie patch! It's the perfect time to sow all sorts of goodies directly outside, like carrots, lettuce, spinach, and beetroot. Don't forget the summer stars – plant out courgettes, pumpkins, and sweetcorn (in big pots for now).

  • Flower Power Explosion: Want your garden to be a riot of colour? By the end of May (unless it's still a bit chilly where you are), you can plant out summer bedding for a dazzling display. Hanging baskets and pots are also prime real estate for vibrant blooms, so get creative!

  • Toughen Up Time: Been nurturing little plant babies indoors? May is their graduation month! Gradually introduce them to the cooler outdoors to get them ready for transplanting later.

Planting

Keeping Your Veggie Patch Happy:

  • Spudtacular Support: Speaking of veggies, your potato plants need some love! Regularly "earth up" the soil around the base of the stems. This protects new shoots from frost and keeps your spuds from going green (not good for eating!).

  • Bean There, Planted That!: May is a great time to sow French beans (both climbing and dwarf varieties) and runner beans directly outdoors, especially when the weather warms up. Get ready for bean fajita nights!

  • Berry Happy Boost: Give your raspberry bushes a special treat with some fertiliser to help them produce the most delicious berries ever.

  • Mulch it Up for Strawberries: Spread a layer of mulch around your strawberry plants. This keeps the soil moist, stops weeds from taking over, and stops your juicy berries from getting dirty. Yum!

Garden TLC:

  • Weed Whacking Champs: Nobody likes uninvited guests! Regularly weed your veggie patch and flowerbeds to keep those unwanted visitors at bay. Dont forget to add this to your green waste bokashi !

  • Lawn Love: Keep your green carpet lush and healthy with regular mowing (remember, some wild areas are great for wildlife!). You can also give your lawn a little pick-me-up with a high-nitrogen fertiliser in the early part of the month. give it a boost as well with some minerals and key elements - Lawncare

  • Hydration Heroes: As the sun gets hotter, don't forget to water your plants regularly, especially during heatwaves. Watering early in the morning or in the evening is best, so the water doesn't just sizzle away. ( At the moment in the UK that’s not a problem) But to keep the water fresh try using ceramic beads in your water butt.

  • Bulb Bonanza: Once your spring bulbs have finished their dazzling display, you can dig them up and divide any clumps that are getting crowded. This means more flowers to enjoy next year!

Just a Few Reminders:

  • Keep an eye out for those sneaky late frosts, especially if you live in a colder area. Protect any delicate plants that might get caught by surprise.

  • Watch out for any pesky bugs or diseases that might try to munch on your lovely plants. There are natural ways to deal with them, so don't worry! Use EM5 to support this.

  • Most importantly, have fun! May is a glorious time to be in the garden. Relax, soak up the sunshine(when it comes), and enjoy watching your little piece of paradise flourish.

Happy planting from all of us at Agriton UK!
