Probiotic Cleaning with EM and EM-1:
 

Effective Micro-organisms can be used as a highly efficient cleaning product. It can be used in exactly the same way as a traditional detergents. You will be able to see the effect of EM instantly, as EM does not foam up like soap based cleaners. This also means that rinsing is therefore not always necessary. EM-1 makes the best EM cleaning product.

EM-1 is an acidic solution using beneficial microbes. These microbes stop mould, fungus and harmful bacteria from growing. EM-1 is best used diluted, 1 litre EM-1 to between 10 and 100 litres water depending on the desired concentration.

N.B. The active constituent of all EM products is living organisms, so mixing with an EM product with chemical products such as disinfectants, anti-bacterial agents and fungicides, as these will the kill the "Effective Micro-organisms" and make the EM product entirely ineffective.
Uses of EM-1
 
  • EM-1 eliminates odours from; pets, cigarette smoke, and odour-causing bacteria.
  • A small spray bottle filled with concentrated EM-1 is handy to keep next to the kitchen sink. It can be used to add to water for washing vegetables, to pour down the sink to reduce odours, and to spray on your dish-sponge to keep it fresh and reduce harmful bacteria.
  • One teaspoon of un-diluted EM-1 can be added to washing machine 'lights & whites' loads. EM-1 is likely to cause darker fabric dyes to fade. If using EM-1, then only use 1/3 of the usual amount of detergent. If possible, let the clothes pre-soak for 10-15 minutes before running through the cycle.
  • 1 Tblsp (15 ml) of EM-1 to about 5l of luke-warm water for mopping floors, particularly tiles, vinyl or laminate surfaces. No need to add detergent. For use on wooden floors or furniture, dilute to 3/4 tsp (3-4 ml) to 5l water. Wipe dry immediately.
  • Add 1 tsp (5 ml) of EM-1 to 1l of water and spray or wipe on tile, porcelain, and Formica. Let it stand on wood or plastic cutting boards to discourage harmful bacteria, such as salmonella. Then rinse. This dilution must be used within 3 days.
  • Diluted EM-1 can be sprayed lightly in shoes to keep them smelling fresh and on shower curtains to discourage mould!
  • Clean waste-paper baskets, dustbins & wheelie bins with this EM-1 mixture.
Washing machines and dishwashers
 
One of the most frequent and damaging problems arising with even new washing machines and dishwashers is limescale build-up. Using EM ceramics makes water softer and puts a brighter shine on dishes. You can half the amount of detergent you need to use in the washing machine and dishwasher if you use EM-1 or EM ceramics.

Use 30 - 50 ml undiluted EM-1 or a few EM ceramic pipes in a closed flannel or bag with each wash, or 1 EM ceramic bath ring stone with each wash.
Cleaning Dirty Objects
 

Dirty objects and especially tools that are heavily soiled with deposits or sediment can be soaked in high concentration EM-1 solution for a a few hours or for exceptionally filth, days. Sometimes the dirt will dissolve during soaking but it will always be softened and can be scrubbed off afterwards and further rinsed under clean water.

Suitable for:

  • Stubborn stains on floors, tiles, kitchen and bathroom furniture, should be treated by thoroughly soaking. Leave on for a while then finish with a scrubbing brush.
  • Coffee or tea rings will loosen and disappear under EM-1. Thermos flasks can also be treated in the same way.
  • Grey water-lines in buckets or water containers. Rub gently and rinse off.
  • Plastic objects can be easily cleaned after a few hours of soaking. The objects will be smooth and shiny once more.
  • Place a few EM pipes in your kettle. This will help to prevent the formation of fur and limescale. For built up deposits of limescale, fill the kettle with a solution of EM-1 and leave it to soak for a whole day. This will easily loosen the sediment. Rinse thoroughly before use.
  • Copper and silver objects will become smoother and shinier following a soaking in a solution of EM-1. Extremely soiled objects will probably also need rubbing or brushing and possibly also a second soaking in EM-1 solution.
  • The bottom of pans that are soiled due to frequent and lengthy use can be cleaned by soaking in a solution of EM-1.
  • Mats that have acquired a nasty smell can be thoroughly soaked with a solution of EM-1 and then hung out to dry. Scrubbing with a brush and then rinsing is an alternative.
Smelly drains and septic tanks
 

Nasty smells coming from pipes and drains can be removed and kept away by using EM-1 regularly. Undiluted EM-1 should be poured down the sink or toilet. This will also prevent the clogging up of drains and waste water pipes.
